Killing for a Dream… of Creating Original Music

Why is Samboat Creating a Song?

Killing for a Dream shouldn’t come as a surprise. When I first started my YouTube channel, the goal was to eventually join a band. I wanted to create a digital portfolio of my playing and to keep up my chops. Posting YouTube Covers fit that really well.

As I continued the channel, I lost sight of that original goal. Playing the covers is fun, but that’s not all I want to do with my playing.

I want to make my own music that people will enjoy listening to, and Killing for a Dream is the start of that Journey.

Why Write Killing for a Dream by Yourself?

Without a band, I have to make music happen by myself.

You might ask “Why not join a band?”

Well, during college, I had an unpredictable schedule due to my academically rigorous school and major. Then, my schedule would change from semester to semester as well. This didn’t lend itself to being in a band.

After I graduated, I moved to a small town and got a full-time job. I’ve tried finding musicians to play with, but I haven’t had any luck. I’ve tried a lot of things, but here are the highlights:

As frustrating as this is, I can understand the lack of musicians. It’s a small rural town (~3000 people) where there’s a lot of farming and ranching. There’s also no strings program at the schools, no guitar club, and no “School of Rock” The fact that I’m an outsider who doesn’t have the network from living here for my whole life doesn’t help either.

All the musicians at the local bars are solo singer/songwriters (usually brought in). At the festivals or weddings there’s usually the same single band or an outside hire.

The closest band I found to audition for was an hour away.

I gave up trying to find a band.

What does "Killing for a Dream" Mean

Killing for a dream is basically me expressing my frustration with trying to become a professional musician.

When I first started my job, there was a lot of down time or tedious tasks that I had to do. To put it simply, it was boring.

I feel like the 40 hour work week is something that I can’t live without. I need that stability, or rather I can’t escape from it.

There were too many times I felt trapped in a cycle and had to keep repeating it with no end in sight.

After I clocked out, my other job was this: making music. I’m not sure if it will pay, but it’s my every day. I have to do this outside of my day job.

I eventually realized that just creating these bass covers won’t lead me to working full time as a musician.

It’s just me doing this. I don’t have a team to help with any kind of ideas, production, scripts, tabs, editing, etc. It’s just me. If I don’t do it, no one else will. It takes a lot of effort, and it’s hard. Especially after working a full day and trying to recover from it.

At this point, you’ve probably realized that it’s me. I’m killing myself for my dream.

Will it pay? Who knows
